I’ve had people on Facebook who I’ve sent a Friend Request who have refused and sent back a comment like, “I don’t know you!” It’s not like I was asking for their Social Security number. I guess they are afraid that I’m some whacko. But that’s not the kind of danger I’m referring to. I’m talking about a monster that grabs ahold of you and sucks away a precious commodity- time. If you’ve never sat down at your computer thinking you’ll spend just a moment just to check on your favorite forum or the number of views on your newest YouTube video and found an hour slip away, you’re the exception. Yea- I know it’s fun. I know it’s a diversion from the routine of running your business. And I know that the occasional results you get make you feel justified spending so much time. But, like so many things in life, it’s really about being disciplined and achieving a proper balance. Here's a trick you'll love that can be applied to all kinds of things- not just time efficiency with Social Networking.

If You Don’t Like People, Pick a Different
Business
Two things happened to me on the same day: 1) I got an email promoting a new service that promised I would never have to call a lead again. Their service would do that work for me. 2) A marketer in our downline called me asking if he could give me some of the leads his Social Networking System was generating because there were so many he didn’t have time to talk with all of them. Did the same thought just run through your mind as ran through mine when I examined these two situations? It seemed almost serendipitous. I could just forward the email from the service to our marketer and problem solved. But... |
IMAGINE THAT! Take Me Out to the Ballgame A few years back Kim and I were invited to a Red Sox game by our friends, Dennis and Joanne. I’m not much of a baseball fan because on TV it’s a little like watching paint dry to me. Sorry. Being in the stands at a live game is totally different, so we were excited. On a side street, nowhere near the main entrance of Boston’s Fenway Park, was a door that we entered, and the next thing I knew we were sitting in the huge plush box with dozens of seats and waitresses catering to any wishes- gourmet foods and anything you could imagine from the bar. We sat right behind a monstrous wall of glass looking down on home plate. It was awesome. I glanced to our left, and in a whisper I said, “Kim look who’s sitting next to us!” I was shocked.

Beware the False Prophet If you read through the personal descriptions of the people you find on social networking sites you’ll find things like this: “I’m a spirited internet entrepreneur who is passionate about freedom, empowerment, and self growth…and personal development coach…” “Marketing specialist and internet network marketing business coach…” “…life and business coach… help you find the life of your dreams…” I’ve had a chance to meet and talk with a great number of these folks. Some are true geniuses. Most are not. One in particular was selling a personal development program. After getting to know this person I found out that he was bordering on financial collapse. His desperation drove him to dream up his program- his way out of his money crisis. |

THE LIGHTER SIDE-
One morning,
the husband returns the boat to
their lakeside cottage after several
hours of fishing and decides to take
a nap. "If you do that, I'll have to charge you with sexual assault," says the woman. "But I haven't even touched you," says the stunned Game Warden.
"That's true,
but you have all the equipment. For
all I know you could start at any
moment!"

You Can’t Escape Selling Selling is so much a part of every day life. I always smile when I hear someone say, “I don’t like sales,” or “I can’t sell anything.” In truth, the only way someone can avoid sales is to avoid people. You may never find yourself selling products, but if you are to live in a world with other people, and you choose to communicate with them, you’re going to be selling. You apply to college, you go out on a date, you go on a job interview, you apply for a loan- you are hoping to sell yourself. When I introduce a new friend to an old friend, I’m selling. If you’re talking, you’re selling. If you’re listening, you’re being sold. Accept that fact and become comfortable with selling, and even master some of the fine points of the process. It will help everywhere- from personal relationships to social networking. Look at the Norman Rockwell picture above and there's a slick salesman so good that he is “selling ice to Eskimos”! Skills like that are like a loaded gun- dangerous if not in the hands of a caring person who subscribes to the "Golden Rule". Sales must be about both sides getting what they need. If you are trying to sell a thing or a concept or service, and you truly believe that it is in the best interest of the person you are trying to sell, then hold your head high and get to it. Master coach, Vince Lombardi, who lead the Green Bay Packers to countless football records, would start the first practice of every season the same way. Professional athletes would assemble, all eyes glued to the master coach. These men were the best of the best in professional football, with years of experience and a deeper understanding of the intricacies of the game than non-professionals like me could imagine. Mr. Lombardi would hold a football raised high over his head and say, "Gentlemen, this...is a pigskin!" Vince Lombardi believed, no matter how experienced his players, it was always best to go back to the basics. That's what you'll find in The SALES CORNER and the sales articles below- sales basics... |

Of all the social media platforms out there, Facebook is my favorite. You can make public announcements, you can form groups of your own, you can send private messages, post videos, pictures, and so much more. The only negative is you must be cautious about how you build your “friends” list. We’re with a network company so I figured there would be groups who were in other network companies. I know that in every network company there are members who are potential leaders but just aren’t getting the coaching and support they need to thrive. I was one of those people a company ago. If these needy marketers became my friends, I might be able to provide value and they might join me. So I set up a free account, put up our bio, uploaded a picture of my face (every time I see someone put up a picture of a sunset- or their dog I think, “it’s Facebook, stupid”), and put the names of other network marketing companies in the search box. You know what? I found endless groups of hundreds of people, sometimes thousands. READ MORE... |

For years social networking was a way for people to meet, exchange business cards, and hope to generate referrals and new business. If you are anywhere near a large city, I promise there are groups meeting every day for exactly that purpose. It really is more of a commercial activity than a social one. Everybody there knows that each member has something to sell, something to promote. It’s really not too hard to personally go to a local networking function like that and get your business card in lots of hands. It’s different though if you attend a social gathering with the same intentions. You can’t show up at a Fundraiser for Cancer attended by 200 people and start hawking what you do- unless you like making an ass out of yourself. SOCIAL NETWORKING continued...

The internet has only just begun to shape our world. In June 2009 news of the death of Michael Jackson raced around the globe- not on ABC or Fox News, but on Twitter and Facebook. With information moving from computers to cell phones back to computers at the speed of light one might think technology will make each of us a smaller, insignificant, less important bit of information in an ocean of X’s and O’s. Not so. If you do this right you can become an icon in your market. And it all starts with personal branding. Many years ago I read a book entitled Positioning. The idea was that each business should strive to build their brand to own a position in the mind of consumers. It talked about Xerox. Back then if you wanted a photo-copy you’d ask, “Could you Xerox this for me?” The brand actually became the word that meant photo-copy. |

YouTube is a great site. If you believe that video will play a huge role in the next wave in social networking, I agree. Right now YouTube wins. There is an incredible amount of information in the videos you find up on YouTube. You can create your own channel there. Post videos of your family, of your business, with how-to information, or videos just to entertain. If you are using YouTube as part of your social networking strategy there are some basic rules you need to know. First you set up your free YouTube account- even if you don’t have a video to put up yet. |
Have you ever sent an email to someone and one moment after you click “send” you get that little “ding” that tells you you’ve got mail? Then you check your inbox and realize that your new mail was an almost instant response that came from the person you were just contacting. How did they respond so quickly? Were they sitting there just waiting, ready with a pre-composed email to send back to you? No. That’s their autoresponder! It's tied into their server’s email system that automatically sends a pre-planned email. It can give one immediate auto-response to every email they receive. Say you are deluged with email, you might write a response for your autoresponder that says, “Due to the volume of emails I get you can expect my response within 24 hours. Thanks for your message.”

So many people have asked me about the value of Twitter and I always tell them that it needs to be a cornerstone of your Social Networking system. You can reach thousands of people. Just don’t expect your one tweet to make it all happen. You need to automate and be consistent. First, set up your free Twitter account. By the way, I know people who have as many as ten different Twitter accounts. Get an interesting bio up there. When people click on your Twitter home page you want them to see you as interesting. Get the picture you use in your Social Networking programs up there too. Remember, you are trying to have people remember you. Then start following people. If you can’t think of a starting point, click on the tab at the top of your home page that says ‘find people’. Then just type any first name in the search box. Try ‘Sue’ for example. There will be a list of “Sue’s” that come up.

Capture
PagesThey are called many things, capture pages, squeeze pages, landing pages, and register pages, just to name a few. What they are is this: web pages that have a place for the viewer to input their personal information, their email address being the most important, so the viewer can get something they want. In return, the person who owns that site gets access to the person who registered via email. Look at the cover of this blog site, AskKimandPhilStone. We’re asking you to register. What do you get? You get notified when the blog is updated, every couple weeks. You get special updates when info comes in that we believe is time-sensitive. In order for that arrangement to continue, we have to provide content that has value to you- every time. It could be entertainment or instruction. It could be information, or access to other people. But if you stop finding value- you’re gone.

Food For Thought: The Future of Advertising I’m sick of advertising. It’s everywhere. If they could figure out a way to write ad copy on the inside of your eyelids, they’d do that too. We just got the new yellow pages. My daughter’s boyfriend, Mike, found them by the front door, brought them in and asked, “Do you want these to go in the trash?” He was serious. He’s in his early 20’s and doesn’t see a speck of value in the yellow pages. He uses his iPhone or his computer to find what he needs. Funny, there are three companies who put out different yellow page books here in St Pete, Florida, and all their books are getting pretty skinny. Kim and I don’t watch much TV but when we do we use a DVR so we can skip commercials. We’ve figured out that in a typical 30 minute show there’s about 8 minutes of commercials. That’s 26.6% of our time spent viewing ads if we don’t use our DVR.

It was a dozen years ago. I signed in to a Network Marketing company, and with my sales skills I knew I’d do great. By that point in my career I’d personally sold millions of dollars in home improvements- with an average ticket of under $3,000. And, I’d personally trained literally thousands of salespeople. With my presentation skills and closing ability I’d be unstoppable. I know I sound like I was an arrogant ass. Wrong. Confident? Yes. I was also smart enough to know that selling wasn’t about me; it was about my customer. It was, and is, about providing value. I was a recruiting machine. The problem? None of the people I recruited could duplicate what I did. |
![]() It’s All About Them The way it works in the company we’re with, the end of the month is the end of the commission period. The company takes a snapshot of the close of the month and uses everybody’s volume and structure to calculate pin levels and commission checks. It’s likely your company does the same. Have you ever gotten close to that last moment and needed more volume or a bigger structure to qualify for a higher pin level or bigger commission? You know, if you had just one more person in that leg you’d flush out the structure needed for that big check. Then, just as the clock is about to chime and the month is officially closed you find someone. IT'S ALL ABOUT THEM continued...
